Who We Are and What We Do

Amboss is an independent, dynamic, and innovative insurance coverholder, approved by Lloyd’s of London and Lloyd’s Insurance Company Brussels. We specialise in underwriting the full spectrum of Midstream and Downstream Oil, Gas and Petrochemicals, including, but not limited to, Refining, Storage and Distribution, Petrochemicals, LNG and renewable Biofuels. Unless incidental to a main program, we do not write Power Generation or Mining. The coverage provided is for Physical Damage & Business Interruption based on mainly manuscript wordings, excluding Third Party Liability and Control of Well.

EEA business operations are managed through our wholly-owned subsidiary, Amboss Underwriting B.V., based in Amsterdam. Our non-EEA business activities are overseen by Amboss Underwriting Ltd, our head office in Zurich. This strategic presence allows us to provide a seamless and efficient service, maintaining high standards across all regions.

Value Proposition

The Amboss team commenced underwriting a Downstream Energy portfolio in December 2020, initially operating as the Zurich branch of Oilfield Insurance Agencies Limited, with a team of professionals which now boasts a combined experience in underwriting & claims management of over 80 years. Led by a Chemical Engineer with more than 30 years of Oil, Gas & Petrochemical underwriting experience, the team had already demonstrated a proven track record in underwriting performance, whilst working together over the previous 13 years.

During its many years of operation, the Amboss team has established strong working relationships across multiple distribution channels, including key clients and brokers, in various geographical regions.

Amboss Underwriting benefits from complementary skills in the team, enabling a high quality assessment of all underwriting aspects of the business, including engineering, wording reviews, costings and claims handling.

Drawing on these strengths, Amboss provides reliable, sustainable underwriting and claims services to the benefit of all parties in the Downstream Energy insurance chain.

Claims Handling

Under the terms of Amboss’ Binding Authority / Coverholder Appointment Agreements, the handling and resolution of claims is delegated to Amboss. Our experienced claims team contributes in the subscription market to expeditious and equitable settlements.

Regulation and Approvals

Amboss Underwriting Ltd, domiciled in Zurich, Switzerland, is approved by Lloyd’s of London as a coverholder.

Amboss Underwriting B.V., domiciled in Amsterdam, Netherlands, is regulated by The Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) and approved by Lloyd’s Insurance Company, Brussels.

Security

With two Binding Authority Agreements (for non-EEA business) and two Coverholder Appointment Agreements (for EEA business), Amboss is supported exclusively by Lloyd’s capacity, led by Beazley, in London and Brussels. With a rating of A+ from AM Best and world-wide licensing approvals, we provide clients and brokers with very strong capacity. As of 28th March 2025, Amboss Underwriting Ltd has a maximum underwriting capacity of USD 50’000’000 for non-EEA risks. For EEA risks, Amboss Underwriting B.V. has a maximum capacity of USD 48’500’000. Precise details of our supporting capacity are available on request at info@amboss.insure.
